Mr Cartlidge and Ms Khan have recently been featured on STV news having undertaken same-day discharge mastectomy surgery for breast cancer patients in NHS Fife. Instead of having a drain left in after surgery and requiring an overnight stay in hospital, suitable patients are able to go home on the same day without a drain.
Using a type of tissue glue spray (Fibrin), this helps clot formation in the surgical field and reduces the risk of bleeding and of subsequent formation of a fluid seroma. This might have to be drained off in the clinic. This allows patients to recover at home but also means that they spend less time in a hospital environment.
Mr Cartlidge used this technique when doing his fellowship at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and has pioneered the technique in breast surgery here in Scotland.
