Ms Lucy Khan Breast Surgeon

Ms Lucy Khan: Profile

I am a consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon in the NHS and private practice. Previously I worked as a consultant in Cheshire, England. I trained at the Edinburgh Breast Unit, one of the busiest departments in Europe. I worked under Prof Mike Dixon OBE, highly regarded across the world as a pioneer in the field of breast surgery and reconstruction. In 2017/18 I undertook an oncoplastic fellowship with the outstanding department at Frimley Park Hospital, Surrey. I gained experience in cosmetic breast surgery, operating in private practice to perform all types of aesthetic breast correction; augmentation, breast reduction and breast uplift (mastopexy). I am a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and am on the GMC specialist register.

I graduated from Edinburgh University Medical School, including a year doing an intercalated BSc (Hons) in Pathology. Then I spent 2 years of foundation doctor training at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and was awarded a national training number in general surgery in south east Scotland.

I gained a breadth of experience across general surgery including vascular, upper GI, colorectal and emergency surgery. I have been fortunate to train under several internationally renowned experts including Mr Steve Nixon (pioneer of laparoscopic/keyhole surgery), Prof Malcolm Dunlop (world expert in colorectal cancer) and the late Prof Ken Fearon (regarded as the father of enhanced recovery after surgery).

I am also the mother of 2 young boys and am acutely aware of the busy, multi-faceted lives that women lead. I know that a diagnosis of breast cancer doesn’t just bring worry about treatment and outcomes, but also significant concerns about how this will affect the many other people and roles in our lives. As a surgeon my goal is to listen to your hopes and expectations, and with the excellent results that we have from breast cancer treatment nowadays, I want to be able to provide you with an outcome that you are satisfied with when you look in the mirror.

Declaration: I have previously received travel and hospitality from GC Aesthetics, Johnson & Johnson Medical and Roche Pharmaceuticals.

Pre-operative Endocrine Therapy

Pre-operative endocrine therapy can be used to down-stage large or locally advanced breast cancers in ER+ disease. In the last four decades, it has evolved from a treatment perceived as an alternative to surgery for those too unfit to undergo surgery or chemotherapy, to the present day where it is a valuable and valid option in the treatment of postmenopausal women with ER-rich (Allred score 7-8, or > 50% staining for ER) breast cancer.

Immediate lipofilling in breast conserving surgery.

The aim of breast conserving surgery (BCS) is to excise the cancer with clear margins whilst at the same time leaving a good or excellent cosmetic result. A significant percentage of women, who have large cancers or have limited breast volumes, achieve poor cosmetic outcomes. BCS with immediate volume replacement using lipofilling or autologous fat transfer is a new technique. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cosmetic outcomes of a pilot study of patients having BCS and immediate lipofilling performed in The Edinburgh Breast Unit.
“Lucy is very easy to talk to, and I feel she really listens to me. I really value her opinion and feel that she says it like it is which is invaluable at a time when I have so many decisions to make. When i thought i had a problem a few weeks after surgery she was amazing fitting me in to see her even though she was in surgery that day. I really feel so lucky to have Lucy in my team and can’t recommend her enough.”
